Basic Kitchen Layout Plans

* If the space allotted for your kitchen is long and narrow, you can go for the basic “one-walled” kitchen design. Remodeling of such a space is quite inexpensive and proper workspace can be arranged by using basic kitchen equipments and apparatus.
* A slight variation of the “one-walled” design is the “L-shaped” kitchen design. This pattern is very popular among the masses and allows ample working space, without any trafficking and crowding problems.
* A highly functional and highly evolved kitchen layout plan is the “double L shaped’ kitchen pattern. This layout not only allows for dual working areas but also ensures comfortable and easy working within the space. The larger “L” has ample of open counter space, as the cook top from this area is shifted to the smaller “L” workstation, unlike the single “L” work space. Also, sinks are installed in each of the workstations, making work easier and faster.
* Another functional kitchen layout plan is the “corridor” pattern, with the installation of counters on both the sides. Although this design is great for the setting up of cabinets and counters, crowding may be a major problem that may occur between the two workstations. This pattern, however, is highly affordable and is widely preferred by the masses.
* The “U shaped” pattern is another kitchen layout pattern, which is very similar with the corridor pattern, except that there is a closed end between the two workstations, for the installation of a sink or a range.
* After deciding on the particular pattern or layout, start fixing the counters and cabinets. There are three basic counter layout patterns, namely the perimeter pattern, the peninsula pattern and finally the island pattern.
* You can proceed to the arrangement of the “kitchen triangle” i.e. the arrangement of the sink, oven or stove and the refrigerator. This triangle should not be more than 9 feet or less than 4 feet for a proper and comfortable working space.

* Correctly estimate the total area allotted for the kitchen space and make a blue print of the area on a piece of grid paper. This will help you plan the arrangements properly and in a systematic manner.

* Hang colorful plates on your kitchen wall, which will come down to be quite inexpensive as compared to prints. Hang the colorful plates on fancy wrought iron hanger. If your kitchen has a theme, you can get plates to compliment the same. Themes like group plates, with birds or cats on them, can also impart a furnished look to your kitchen walls.
* A nice idea to decorate your kitchen walls is to adorn them with your family photos. Get suitable frames for the photographs that match your kitchen décor. You can display them on your kitchen wall in any pattern that you like.
* You can choose a wall art design for the kitchen walls. There is a variety of designs to choose from, such as tropical wall decor, nautical wall designs, leaf metal wall art, sports wall decor, abstract wall art, and a lot more. * A good option is to mount a metal pan rack on the wall and display your glossy and expensive cookware on it, instead of hiding them in the closets. * If you are good enough at painting, you can also paint an interesting design on the kitchen wall, on your own. You can buy or create stencil cutouts in different shapes or designs that you wish. Now, cut a kitchen sponge into half. Dip the halved sponge in the thinned acrylic paint. Hold the stencil on the wall and dab the sponge on the opening. You can also make a border near the top of the wall and do many such artistic experiments.
* You can also use accessories to decorate your wall. Simple accessories that are functional and stylish, adding to the usability factor, make up an ideal kitchen war décor. Decorative moldings can also be used to impart a look of uniformity to the kitchen. Moldings are available in several varieties and finishes. You can also match them with your cabinets and rest of the kitchen décor.

How To Organize Your Kitchen

Years ago, when Doordarshan and television were synonymous, a reputed home appliance company ran an advertisement for a washing machine, in which they showed a little girl opening a wardrobe only to have all the clothes fall on her. If your kitchen reminds you of that advertisement, take the bitter pill of accepting that it finally needs an overhaul. Without being too specific, there are sure to be knives and forks strewn around the cabinets, items that you use once in a decade, coming in the way of items that you use ten times in a day – in short, the state of total disarray rules. What is meant here is that, if you have been putting off organizing your kitchen for a while now, it might do you some good to invest some time now, so that you may waste less time, looking for stuff later. After all, as someone rightly put it, the right time, is right now! Read on to know the tips for organizing your kitchen.

Tips For Organizing Your Kitchen

Throw The Clutter
Clutter will consist of every item or appliance that you have not used for more than a year. These items are often kept alongside other items that we put to use every day and come in the way. If you regularly use a mixer grinder for grating coconut, give away the manual one to your mother or granny – they are better at using these things (and also mortally scared of electrical appliances!). As young professionals who earn well, you may have brought every new item that promised to make cooking easier for you, but ask yourself, do you really need both an OTG (oven-toaster-grill) and a microwave? You can easily do away with one of these items.

Replace/Fix Things That Don’t Work
If the handle of a certain pressure pan is wobbly, fix it or get it replaced. Check the gasket of your pressure cookers and pans. Check all the kitchen knives to see, if any of them has gone blunt. If so, get it sharpened or buy a new one.

Store Frequently Used Stuff Within Easy Reach
All items that come in handy ten times in a day, are to be kept within easy reach – all those pans and kadais, that you use each day for cooking, should be kept close to the stove, so that they can be reached easily. So should tablespoons, ladles, kitchen knives, and cutting or chopping boards. Those that are used infrequently like the stand for making idlis, etc, should be kept either in storage spaces, or at the far end of the cabinet. Electric rice cookers, if used infrequently, should be relegated to the storage space above the kitchen, from where only your husband can take it down! Utensils that are used for microwave cooking should be kept separately, preferably near the microwave itself. You could of course make an exception, with glass items that are used inside the microwave – they should be kept at a place from where they may not fall and break.

Clean With Soap
All those jars that you use to store kitchen item must have accumulated a lot of dust. Empty them and clean them, within and outside, with warm, soapy water. Let them dry and fill them with their respective items once again.

Order! Order!
Keep all your spices and other ready-to-use powders in such a way, that they only make cooking easy and pleasurable for you. If you don’t make pav bhaji too often, keep the instant masala packet in one corner or, better still, in the refrigerator. Items like salt, tea/coffee, sugar, turmeric, chili powder, etc come in handy every day and thus should be kept within easy reach.
